Can I Afford a Toyota Supra?

A BMW underneath, a Toyota above, and one of the most over-internet-debated sports cars of the decade. Let’s see if it can survive your actual monthly budget.

Example values below. Edit anything — price, APR, insurance — to fit your situation.

Car affordability inputs

Try a preset

Vehicle details

What the dealer wants from you (and the government).

Out-the-door sticker, before tax.

Cash you’re putting in up front.

What you’re trading in (zero if none).

Your state’s rate — e.g. 6.625.

Loan details

The part that makes future-you do the math at 2am.

Annual interest rate. Enter as a normal percent — 6.9, not 0.069.

Common: 36, 48, 60, 72. Longer term, more interest.

Monthly ownership costs

The stuff salespeople conveniently leave off the brochure.

Your real quote, not the optimistic one.

Oil, tires, brakes — the boring future.

Income & existing debts

So we can tell if this is a vibe or a problem.

Take-home (after tax) gives the most honest answer.

Credit cards, student loans, etc. Exclude rent.

Costs people forget

The line items that don’t show up on the dealer’s quote sheet for a Toyota Supra.

  • BMW-shaped service bills

It uses BMW’s B58 engine and ZF 8-speed. Service is closer to BMW prices than to RAV4 prices, especially out of warranty.

  • Tires, even on the I4 trim

Both the 2.0 and 3.0 wear performance tires that aren’t cheap. The 3.0 chews them faster than people expect from a small-ish car.

  • Two seats means two seats

The Supra is uncompromising about that. If you regularly carry more than one passenger, do not buy this car and then complain about the Supra being a two-seater.

Reality check before you buy

Toyota Supra
  • How tall are you? The cockpit is snug. The driving position is great or wrong, with very little middle ground.

  • Manual is finally available. It costs more, slows the 0–60, and is unambiguously the right answer if you’ll daily it.

  • Toyota’s warranty + dealer network is genuinely the best argument for picking it over the BMW Z4.

  • Resale has held up better than most predicted. Buy it because you want to drive it, not as a flip.

Common questions about owning a Toyota Supra

Honest answers, no sales pitch.

  • Is the Supra reliable?
The mechanicals are well-understood from years of BMW service. Add Toyota’s dealer experience and warranty and you get one of the more usable enthusiast cars on sale.
  • Should I get the 2.0 turbo or the 3.0?
The 2.0 is faster than its spec sheet suggests, weighs less, and is genuinely fun. The 3.0 is the one most enthusiasts want and the one that holds value better. Pick the one that fits the monthly cost above.
  • Is the Supra ‘really a BMW’?
Engine, transmission, electronics, lots of switches — yes. Chassis tuning, body, dealer experience, warranty — Toyota. Both companies got something out of the deal.

This is not financial advice

CanYouAffordIt is for entertainment and ballpark planning only. Real insurance quotes, sales tax rules, dealer fees, loan approvals, and maintenance costs vary by location, vehicle, and credit profile. Before signing a contract, talk to a human you trust — and read the fine print.
