Costs people forget

The line items that don’t show up on the dealer’s quote sheet for a Range Rover.

  • Reliability has historically been the issue

Newer Range Rovers are significantly better. Out-of-warranty examples remain risky. Buy with a comprehensive extended warranty or buy new.

  • Air suspension is wonderful and a long-term cost

Plan for it. The ride is part of what makes the car.

  • Plug-in hybrid version exists and matters

PHEV Range Rover gets meaningful electric-only range. The savings only show up if you charge at home.

Reality check before you buy

Range Rover
  • Cross-shop the Range Rover Sport (smaller, cheaper, similar interior).

  • Used Range Rovers depreciate hard. That's a buying opportunity and a warning.

  • Long-wheelbase model has class-leading rear seat. Justifies its existence for executive use.

  • Resale is weaker than Lexus equivalents. Buy to keep.

Common questions about owning a Range Rover

Honest answers, no sales pitch.

  • Range Rover vs G-Wagon?
Range Rover is the comfort-and-capability pick. G-Wagon is the icon. Different priorities; similar prices on top trims.
  • How reliable is the new model?
Improved meaningfully. Still not Toyota territory. Expect dealer trips that a Lexus owner wouldn't see.
  • Is the V8 worth the premium?
Sounds great, drinks like one. The inline-six MHEV is plenty fast and meaningfully cheaper to own.
